Amazon FBA Forwarding: Here's How to Avoid the 5 Most Common Delays

October 21, 2026

Your shipment cleared the US port in a day and still missed the FBA receiving window by two weeks. That gap is rarely bad luck. It is almost always one of five repeatable mistakes that stall inbound at the fulfillment center gate, and every one of them is fixable in China before the container ever seals.

Most China-to-FBA delays never happen on the ocean. A Shenzhen-to-ONT all-water move runs roughly 16 to 19 days; routing to LAX and draying inland adds only a few. The real time loss shows up after arrival, when a carton fails a scan, an appointment was never booked, or a PO number is wrong on the pallet label. Fix those five points and your inbound reliability climbs fast.

Labeling: the silent killer of FBA receipts

Amazon requires an X00, FNSKU, or scannable barcode on every sellable unit, plus an SKU label on each carton. A faded thermal print, a label stuck over a seam, or a duplicate FNSKU across mixed products will get the whole shipment set aside for manual review, which can take five to ten business days at a busy center.

The fix is cheap and early. At Yitong we print and apply FNSKU labels at our China warehouse during consolidation, then scan-verify each carton against your shipment plan. A ten-minute check in Shenzhen is worth ten days saved in Ontario.

Delivery appointments are not optional

Amazon does not accept walk-up drop-offs at most fulfillment centers. Your carrier must book a delivery appointment through the carrier portal, and slots fill days ahead during peak. Miss the slot and the truck waits, accrues detention, and may be turned away entirely.

Build the appointment into your timeline from the start. For a Shenzhen-to-ONT shipment we book the slot once the vessel passes the trans-Pacific midpoint, so it lines up with the actual arrival rather than a guess.

Carton rules that trigger rejections

Amazon enforces strict carton specs. No carton over 50 lb for standard-size items, no side longer than 63 cm for certain programs, and a single SKU per carton unless you pay for mixed-SKU prep. Oversized or overweight cartons get flagged at the dock and often returned to the carrier at your cost.

Measure and weigh every carton at pack-out. If a product runs heavy, split it across two cartons and relabel. The rule is boring, but it is enforced on every load.

Prep that actually passes

Polybagged units need a suffocation warning when the bag opening exceeds five inches. Units must be individually wrapped or bundled per Amazon's prep guidance. Loose items in a carton without prep get sorted by hand, which pushes your receive date out and can trigger an inbound defect alert on your account health.

A prep checklist at origin beats a prep fee at destination. We run your FBA prep list against the shipment plan before the container seals, so nothing reaches the FC non-compliant.

PO and ASN compliance

The purchase order and ASN data must match what Amazon expects, or the system cannot route inventory to the right bin. A typo in the PO, a missing carton count, or a mismatched ship-from address creates a reconciliation backlog that can sit for weeks.

Send us your shipment plan and we cross-check the PO, ASN, and carton content before departure. That single step removes the most expensive delay of all: inventory that arrived but is not sellable.

West coast vs east coast changes the clock

Routing to ONT or LGB on the west coast keeps drayage short, so the appointment is easier to hit. East coast centers like CLT or MDW add rail or long-haul trucking, which stretches the window and makes a missed appointment far costlier. If your inventory mostly sells on the coasts, ship FCL to a west-coast FC and let Amazon redistribute. If you need east-coast proximity, build an extra week of buffer into the plan and confirm the rail segment before you commit.

Three things to do before your next FBA shipment

  • Confirm FNSKU labels are scannable and applied to every unit and carton.
  • Book the delivery appointment while the vessel is still at sea.
  • Verify carton weight and dimensions against Amazon's current specs at pack-out.

The takeaway

FBA inbound is a compliance game, not a speed game. Get the paperwork and packaging right in China and the US leg takes care of itself. At Yitong we run FBA forwarding from major ports to ONT, FTW, CLT, and other centers, with labeling, prep, and appointment booking built into the service. Send us your next shipment plan and we will flag exactly which of these five points will stall it, before you pay for the container.
